Tradition meets modernity – brand development for a Senegalese hotel
Tradition meets modernity – brand development for a Senegalese hotel
Initial situation
How do you create new jobs and generate additional income for the Senegalese region of Kolda?
Auberge Yoro Foula” is located in Medina Yoro Foula (approx. 3,500 inhabitants), in the Kolda region, in the south of Senegal. The project was financed by the Senegalese state and built under the direction of the mayor of Medina York Foula. The hotel is expected to create necessary jobs and generate an additional source of income for the village. The primary target group consists of government members and aid organisations.
Medina Yoro Foula
The inhabitants of the village “Medina Yoro Foula” are given a financial perspective through the new hotel. It was im-portant to involve them in all processes. Traditional elements and colours have a high value and should form the formal basis for the new brand.
Design
A special pattern was developed for the new brand “Auberge Yoro Foula”. The flexible pattern design permeates all communication channels. The character of the font family forms an exciting counterpoint to the geometric shapes of the pattern.
The result is a highly flexible brand design that reflects the spirit and soul of the region and its inhabitants. Warm, confident and full of optimism.
Derivation
The geometric clothing design of the inhabitants serves as a source of form.
Pulaar is a variant of Fulfulde, which is the first language spoken by the Fulbe people and the assimilated Tukulor in the Senegal River valley (Futa Toro). Their inhabitants like to decorate themselves with henna tattoos.
The colour code is based on the colours of the Senegalese flag, which has a high status among the population.
